Transgender Day of Remembrance

Trangender Day of Rememberence (TDOR) is an annual observance on November the 20th that honours the memories of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Additionally, during the week of November 14-20, individuals and organisations around the world participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people and address the issues these communities face.

The TDOR was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil top honour the memory of Rita Hester a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated alll the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Trans Aware TDOR 2017

Trans Aware, Teesside University and Laura Thurman, our community cohesion officer with Cleveland police linked up to create the official TDOR 2017 for Tees Valley and East Cleveland.

The remembrance walk left the clock tower in Redcar a little after 9am after a gathering where the names of those who have lost their lives to hatred and bigotry were observed. Redcar mayor Karen King attended.

Our remembrance walk, an idea created by Laura Thurman aimed to link East Cleveland to the Tees Valley as Trans Aware covers both these areas within it's support network.

The walk stopped at Normanby on route to Teesside University.

Teesside University held a range of events during the afternoon as part of our combined efforts to recognise those who have lost their life.

At 6:45pm the Arc in Stockton hosted our TDOR event.

This year we celebrated life as well as remembering those who have passed, with live music and entertainment from 7-9pm. This was followed by a vigil where the names of those who had lost their lives due to transphobia, hatred and bigotry were honoured.

Trans Aware and Teesside University had invited all to the walk, the event at Teesside University and the evening event at the Arc in Stockton -on-Tees.

You don't have to be transgender to be trans-positive.
